A kid tries to get to the treasure in her sister's safe.
I looked through the glass window.
Good, I thought, She's still out there.
I searched around the room until I found the container.
First one way, then the other, but I couldn't guess the code. The ticking the lock made as I turned it made me think of the beat to my sister's favorite song.
I turned the lock, each number the same as the number of beats in one line of the song. I had almost unlocked the safe when I heard footsteps. To avoid being caught, I threw myself into the closet. I watched the room through a small hole in the closet door.
My sister closed the door and walked up to the safe. She quickly unlocked it, humming her song a little as she worked. She looked from side to side while she drew the door to the safe open and took out a piece of the treasure so rich it made my mouth water.
“Maria, I need you!” my mom called my sister.
Maria reluctantly put the item back into the safe. However, she seemed to have forgotten to lock the safe back up when she exited the bedroom.
When she was gone, I silently came out of the closet and to the small box. I peeked in to find exactly what I expected. Inside the safe were three of Grandma's cookies perfectly preserved from the week before, when she came over last. I couldn't help but take one before I ran out of my sister's room and into my own across the hallway.
