Inspired by 1 Nephi 8:23
Mist creeps in, clings close,
blocks all glow of hope ahead.
I freeze mid-step
who never left the path
or lifted hand from iron rod.

         Keep quiet.
someone hisses, coaxes—
         Don’t invite pity.
his whispers worm into me—
         Don’t show your broken soul.

I push forward,
scrape across uneven ground
toward last seen light,
but even with guide rail,
I stumble.

         Keep quiet.
my grip relaxes—
         They won’t understand.
my eyes shift—
You are too wounded to heal.

I glimpse a side road,
someplace smooth
to lose myself down.
My foot hangs

God knows
I can’t stand alone forever,
lips pressed tightly,
never calling for help, never
choosing the next step.
