A celebration of summer.

I am north latitude seeking the sun;
based on the tilt of the Earth, summer’s here.
Praise summer solstice at once everyone.

June twenty first is the kickoff for fun;
baseball and hot dogs and beach chairs appear.
I am north latitude seeking the sun.

The fight for day against night has been won;
extended daylight is perfectly clear.
Praise summer solstice at once everyone.

Cold winter winds are indeed on the run;
gone are the shovels and cold winter gear.
I am north latitude seeking the sun.

Earth has an axis that’s second to none;
the tilt is forward and for that I cheer.
Praise summer solstice at once everyone.

I am so happy that summer’s begun;
it is my favorite time of the year.
I am north latitude seeking the sun;
praise summer solstice at once everyone.

____________

The Earth tilts on its axis at 23.4 degrees. In summer the northern latitudes
are tilted towards the sun and therefore the energy received from the sun is greater.
In winter the north is tilted away. It should be noted that when it’s summer for
the northern hemisphere, Earth is actually further from the sun than it is in winter.
Be that as it may, the tilt is the governing factor for why there are seasons.
