Set in the backdrop of the 1930 prohibition days just outside the Twin Cities, Minnesota this crime story is told by two of the participants.
Cynthia Freeman escapes her home, her abusive husband, and overbearing mother-in-law. Later a woman is discovered in the woods. Patrick Freeman identifies the dress as his wife's.
When Detective Herbert McDowell finds the second dead woman in the woods outside the Stillwater Prison three years later, he wonders if the area is a dumping ground for the Mob. What connection is there between the dead wife of a local bootlegger and the dancer they just found?
Herb is fighting corruption in his precinct. It seems a losing game. More of a loss since the death toll of officers and criminal’s climbs as shoot outs between the Mob gangs ensue. His wife, refuses to bring a child into the world who’s’ father may be killed at any time. No reasoning will change her mind.
As the case of the dancer gets closer to finding a killer his own life becomes in danger. Herbert suspects his partner of being on the “O’Connell’ payroll. Can he trust Dolf Andersson or does he have to watch his back all the time?
The appearance of a missing suspect changes the whole case and turns it upside down.
