Stalking the mighty blue beast with the compound eyes.
Daily flash fiction contest entry 2/1/2018.
The buck stood in the open field, his eye centered in my scope as my finger began tightening on the trigger. The incessant buzzing around my head forced my closed, dream-filled eyes to open as the clock showed 4:17 AM and the deer disappeared from view replaced by a blue fly perched on the nail holding my calendar to the wall.
“My buck’s gone. My sleep went with the buck, and your blue ass belongs to me”, I growled as my hand closed around the ”Guns and Ammo” magazine laying on my nightstand, twisting it into the cylinder of death. I came slowly out of bed but the fly circled my head once more and settled on the wall nearest the door and as I struck I realized I was off and once again the fly buzzed my nose and returned to her perch on the nail head. In my anger and my fury I looked into her multifaceted eyes and could see my hate engorged face reflecting back at me a thousand times and each perfectly formed me could hear that cursed fly snickering.
I Twisted on one leg and aimed my body toward the fly and computed how fast I would have to launch myself to intercept the blue bitch bug as she came off her perch. With a low snarl and a guttural howl of rage, I hurled myself into the air, and my paper sword of death careened toward my prey as she changed her course and slammed into my ear. My body slammed with much greater force into the wall. The nail pierced my eye, and I felt the jelly running down my cheek. The fly rested giggling while lapping contentedly in the corner of my eye.
