INT. – A SCHOOL HALLWAY – MID-AFTERNOON

We open to a school hallway with several groups of people walking past and talking. As camera goes through the hall, we see MARIE CARTER, (14), dark blonde hair just past her shoulders and in a ponytail, wearing black jeans and a T-shirt, glasses, a backpack on her, alone and talking on her cellphone.

                                                 MARIE
Yes, Mom. I just have my club,
                             and then I'll be home.

Marie puts her phone away and walks out of the school. The camera follows her as she breaks into a run towards some trees. Hiding behind them, she opens the backpack and pulls out a long black dress with long sleeves and a high neck and slips it over her clothes. She also puts on some black boots with no heels. She takes her glasses off and takes out a bunch of makeup, smearing black makeup around her eyes, then putting black lipstick on her lips. Then she pulls the rubber band out of her hair, and grabs a black hooded cape and puts it on, pulling the hood over her head. She now looks like she is 18. Marie hides her backpack in a secret hole in the top of the tree. Finally, Marie runs off.

INT. – AN ABANDONED BUILDING JUST OUTSIDE TOWN – MID-AFTERNOON

Marie, still in disguise runs up and onto a stage-like raised floor in front of a crowd of people, mostly men. They are all wearing black, and look like spies or criminals.

                                                 THE CROWD
                                       (chanting)
                             Gen-er-al! Gen-er-al! Gen-er-al!

Marie holds her hand up and the room goes completely silent.

                                                 MARIE
Are you tired of living in this
                             dump?

                                                 THE CROWD
                                       (cheering simultaneously)
                             Yeah!

                                                 MARIE
Would you like to see one ruler
                             for the entire world?

                                                 THE CROWD
                                       (cheering simultaneously)
                             Yeah!

                                                 MARIE
Who would be a good leader?
                             Surely not someone popular.
                             They wouldn't know the hardship
that some of us have gone
                             through. They haven't been
                             ignored or put in jail.
So who, then, do you think could
                             take on the responsibility?

                                                 THE CROWD
                                       (cheering simultaneously)
                             Gen-ral! Dark-ness! Gen-ral!
                             Dark-ness!

                                                 MARIE
                             I can't hear you!

                                                 THE CROWD
                                       (cheering louder simultaneously)
                             Gen-ral! Dark-ness! Gen-ral!
                             Dark-ness!

                                                 MARIE
Yes, that's right! I should be the
                             queen of the world!
                                       (laughs evilly)
Any one of you who does not
agree with me is free to go
                                       (short pause)
                             into the shark's tank!

INT. – A LARGE CITY OFFICE BUILDING FOR IMPORTANT PEOPLE – MID-AFTERNOON

Mayor WILSON CARTER, (37), brown hair with the occasional white one, short brown beard, mayor, business suit, sits at his desk piled with papers. A KNOCK is heard.

                                                 MAYOR CARTER
                             Come in.

Marie, still dressed up in her black outfit, walks in. She stops a couple feet from the mayor's desk.

                                                 MAYOR CARTER
How can I help you, Miss
                                       (pause)

                                                 MARIE
                             The name is General Darkness.
                             If you would kindly hand
yourself over, before I have to
                             call my army.

                                                 MAYOR CARTER
                                       (stuttering)
                             W-what do you want?

                                                 MARIE
                                       (in normal sweet voice)
Not much. All I desire is
                                       (voice turns evil sounding)
                             world domination!

                                                 MAYOR CARTER
(pressing a button on a microphone)
Linda, please get this crazy lady
                             out of my office.

Marie kicks the microphone off the table and away from the mayor before he can finish. Talking is heard in the hallway, but far enough away that it's impossible to tell what they're saying. Marie grabs the mayor by his wrist and pulls him to the large window. She tosses the microphone through the window, shattering the glass. Marie then jumps out the window, still holding onto the mayor. She grabs a rope hanging in front of her, then swings the mayor towards a different rope.

                                                 MARIE
You could choose not to help me,
if you want. But then I'd have to
                             cut your rope.

Camera looks down, and we see cars driving on the street about 40 stories below. The camera rises again to show the mayor's panicked and nervous face.

INT. – THE CARTER HOUSE – LATE AFTERNOON/EARLY EVENING

Marie, not in black costume, sits at the family table, along with MORGAN CARTER (36), medium-length blonde hair with bangs, blue eyes, light skin, dangling earrings, long red dress, and CHARLOTTE CARTER (12), looks exactly like her mother except she has no bangs or earrings, wearing a purple T-shirt and jeans.

                                                 MRS. CARTER
Girls, do you know where your
father is? He should be home by
                             now.

Marie shrugs. Charlotte shakes her head no.

                                                 MRS. CARTER
Marie, you got home late. Why
did your club meeting last so
long? It has never run that late
                             before.

                                                 MARIE
Oh, um, we had so much fun, we
                             simply lost track of time.
                                       (pause)
May I be excused? I have
                             homework.

                                                 MRS. CARTER
                             I suppose. Charlotte, do you
                             have any to do?

                                                 CHARLOTTE
                                       (sighs and stands up)
I guess. I was just hoping I could
                             help look for Dad.

                                                 MRS. CARTER
                             I know. I'll call the police. Don't
worry, we'll find him, I promise.

Marie stands up suddenly and runs to her bedroom. Charlotte slowly follows Marie.

INT. – MARIE'S ROOM – NIGHT

Marie stands in her bedroom, now all dressed up in her villain suit. The bedroom is simple, with a dresser, closet, bed, bookshelf, desk, and chair. There is no sign of clutter. Marie walks up to the window. She looks behind her, then slides the window open, tosses a rope down after tying it to her bed, and climbs out, as there is no screen in her window. The camera follows Marie as she silently runs in the shadows down some streets, through an alley, over a wall, through a field, and to a multistory, abandoned hotel.

INT. – THE ABANDONED HOTEL – NIGHT

Marie closes the guarded door that leads to outside behind her. The camera follows her as she walks toward the stairs, then, ignoring a rope that is dangling down from the top floor, she climbs the stairs until she reaches the last stair. She is at the beginning of a hallway, where instead of doors, there are jail bars and bars stripe the windows. Marie walks down the hallway and into the room at the end, which is a regular door. As she walks in, the twenty men, all dressed like before, stand.

                                                 MARIE
Men of the Darkness Army, I,
                             your leader, General Darkness,
                             have a crisis. Mayor Carter's
wife has called for the police to
find him. Although it is quite
early for them to find out, I think
it is time for Stage Two. Work
together to capture the Chief of
                             Police, the Deputy Chief, and
                             whatever other important police
                             officers are around. Without
                             them, the police officers won't
know what to do. Now get to
                             work!
                                       (laughs evilly)

All of the men run out of the room. Marie walks out, then turns to the hotel cell closest to the meeting room.

                                                 MARIE
                             Carter, get over here!

Mayor Carter walks over to the hotel jail door.

                                                 MAYOR CARTER
                             Yes, Miss, er, General.

                                                 MARIE
                                       (nastily)
                             That's General Darkness to you!

                                                 MAYOR CARTER
                                       (stuttering)
                             Y-yes, G-general Darkness.

                                                 MARIE
How do you like living in here
so far? Horrible enough for you?

                                                 MAYOR CARTER
                                       (slowly, choosing his words carefully)
                             Yes, thank you. Quite horrible.
                             You might want to commend
your men for such a good job
                             making this the worst experience
                             I have ever had.

                                                 MARIE
                             I don't commend them. What
sort of villain do you think I am?

                                                 MAYOR CARTER
                             I brilliant super-villain, for sure.

                                                 MARIE
                             Not brilliant. Genius! Amazingly
                             brilliant genius! Another remark
like that, and I'll have you on
                             half-rations, so I'd be careful, if I
                             were you.

ACT TWO

INT. – MARIE'S ROOM – NIGHT

Marie still has her window open and there is still a rope hanging down, but she just got out of her costume, so she looks normal. Charlotte opens the door and comes in.

                                                 CHARLOTTE
                             What are you doing, Marie?

                                                 MARIE
                             Just letting some air in.

                                                 CHARLOTTE
With a rope in the window?

                                                 MARIE
Fine, I'll tell you. But you better
not tell Mom, or she'll kill me!

                                                 CHARLOTTE
                             What did you do?

                                                 MARIE
Well, I was going to look for
Dad. I don't think the police are
going to find him. We know
where Dad would go and stuff
                             like that.

                                                 CHARLOTTE
What makes you think he wasn't
                             kidnapped?

                                                 MARIE
Would Dad just let someone take
                             him? I don't think so.

                                                 CHARLOTTE
You're right. He must have been
                             trying to do something important.
Maybe he had to run away to
                             protect himself or us.

                                                 MARIE
                             That's what I was thinking. So I
was going to check all of his
                             favorite places and where he'd
                             hide.

                                                 CHARLOTTE
                             I'm coming with you.

                                                 MARIE
                             What?

                                                 CHARLOTTE
                             I'm coming with you.

                                                 MARIE
But I need someone to cover for
                             me if Mom finds out.

                                                 CHARLOTTE
                             Well
                                       (pause)
                             Maybe you could do that!

                                                 MARIE
Good idea. You go look, and I'll
                             cover for you. Go on!

Charlotte climbs down the rope and runs off. Marie smiles, then gets her General costume back on. After getting all dressed up, she runs after her sister.

EXT. – AN ALLEYWAY – NIGHT

Marie, in her General suit, makes herself visible to Charlotte. Charlotte jumps back when Marie comes out of the shadows.

                                                 CHARLOTTE
                                       (stammering)
                             W-who are you?

                                                 MARIE
                             I am General Darkness. You
seem a bit young to be out this
late. Why don't you come with
me, and I'll take you home?

                                                 CHARLOTTE
I'm not supposed to go with
                             strangers.

                                                 MARIE
Well, I told you my name. I am
no longer a stranger to you.

                                                 CHARLOTTE
                             I don't think that's the way it
                             works, Miss General. Now, tell
                             me everything you know about
                             my father.

                                                 MARIE
Yes, yes, nice mayor, that man. I
tried to warn him, but he
wouldn't listen to me. They got
him. There was nothing I could
do about it. I'm sorry, Char- er,
                             Miss.

                                                 CHARLOTTE
Uh, huh. Now tell me where
my father is, before I call the
                             police!

Charlotte pulls a cell phone out of her pocket. Marie kicks the phone out of Charlotte's hand and it skids across the pavement. Before Charlotte can reach down and grab it, Marie crunches it under her boot.

                                                 MARIE
Now, little missy, tell me who
knows you're out, before I do
                             take you to your dad.

                                                 CHARLOTTE
                                       (stuttering)
                             O-only my big sister. I didn't
                             want to get it trouble.

                                                 MARIE
                                       (sighs)
You can go. Don't tell a soul, not
                             even your sister. Do you
                             understand?

                                                 CHARLOTTE
                             Yes, Miss General.

                                                 MARIE
                             Good. And remember, I'm
                             watching you.

                                                 CHARLOTTE
                             I wouldn't forget, even if I tried.

Charlotte slowly walks away, looking back only once. By then, Marie has disappeared into the shadows again. Charlotte runs home.

INT. – MARIE'S ROOM – NIGHT

Charlotte climbs back through the window to find Marie, not in her costume, waiting for her. Out of breath from running, Charlotte sits down.

                                                 MARIE
How'd it go? Did you get any
leads on where Dad might be?

                                                 CHARLOTTE
                                       (hesitates a moment)
                             No. I couldn't find anything.

                                                 MARIE
Oh, well. We'll figure it out
                             eventually, right?

                                                 CHARLOTTE
Well, maybe we should just let
the police handle it, you know?

                                                 MARIE
Do you really think Dad would
give up on us like that?

                                                 CHARLOTTE
                                       (looking down)
                             No.

Noticing a bit of fabric on the floor, Charlotte pulls a black hooded cape out from under Marie's bed.

                                                 CHARLOTTE
                             What's this?

                                                 MARIE
Oh, that's, um, my costume for
                             Laura's party

                                                 CHARLOTTE
Marie, that's not for another few
                             months.

                                                 MARIE
Right, but it's never to early to
                             start, is it?

                                                 CHARLOTTE
                                       (eyeing her sister)
No, I suppose not. Well, it's late.
                             I'd better get to bed.

                                                 MARIE
                             Right, right. I'll see you
tomorrow. We'll think of the next
                             step then, right?

                                                 CHARLOTTE
                             Right.
                                       (pause)

Charlotte walks out of Marie's bedroom, then closes the door.

FADE OUT
