I let you in and began to trust
Because you mattered, your words had value.

We stood together as one, shields interlocked against the world
A solid wall of steel impervious to entry or harm
A stray glance outside was the first chink in the armor
a crack in the core foundation barely visible yet it remained

A small sense of indifference threatened to widen the breach
Work, children, stress, and finances slowly worked at the wall
Hurtfully chosen words did damage and tore from within
The wall was brought down around us suddenly

Your words were now hurtful and damaging
They carried value for a short time more
A new wall slowly rose up to protect
