Poem about a prophecy made long ago. Based on a picture of an approaching storm.
Storm Warning

Kathleen McNamara

From the shelter of the cave mouth
we watch the monster approach
the prophecy of the Elders
the vehicle of destruction

The distant granite elevations
fir trees covering their flanks
now covered in mounds of snow
our lifelines to the other side

The skies darken and lower
the winds scream
the temperature plummets
lightning and thunder compete
with hail and the blizzard
the sere valley soon to be buried
the unprepared will perish

The massive dark monster
stalks our mountain
the time has come to retreat
into the bowels of this hill
we will shelter here
like the little animals of the prarie below

The Elders prepared well
for our safety from the onslaught
sent by the vengeful gods
we pray the final prophecy rings true
the sun will return
life will once again
teem on the valley floor
flowers and animals and man

We will fulfill the prophecy
We will survive
