With great persistence
the pony is taught
to love the saddle’s hold
and taste of the bit,
bear weight of the rider
and whim of the rein.

A rumble in the distance
dull, unbroken thunder
by band of free hooves;
dust and grit plumes
herald the approach
of feral reckoning.
