I heard a little folklore about a local place here in western Maine.
Puzzle Mountain

Puzzle Mountain
you will always be
a mystery to me.

It came about during days of yore,
When Maine was Massachusetts
To the nor’
an outdoorsman explored these hills.

Puzzle Mountain
you will always be
a mystery to me.

While wandering, he spied a pile of graphite.
He noted where it was found,
Stone the color of a stormy night;
and wanted to come back for the store.

Puzzle mountain
you will always
remain a mystery to me.

Down the mountain he scaled,
Axe held firmly in hand,
“God help me,” he wailed,
The magic cache never forgotten.

Puzzle mountain
you will always
remain a mystery to me.

After leaving the hills behind
he went home
vowing to return to find
the mountainside treasure.

Puzzle mountain
you will always
remain a mystery to me.

The wanderer went back many times
searching every cranny and cliff
Through many descents and climbs
but never found the graphite horde.

Puzzle mountain
you will always
remain a mystery to me.

As the years slowly wound their way,
The wandered said it was a puzzle,
Scratching his head and looking away
Over ridges and valleys.

Puzzle mountain
you will always
remain a mystery to me.
