For The Lighthouse Poetry Contest (Matthew 9:9)
“Woe to the ship sailing without paying it's dues.”
Levi sits before his seaside custom house,
Gathering tolls and oppressing the people.
Large crowds brought Jesus teaching and preaching.
Levi was listening and quietly thinking.
Quite another day began dawning.
This Jesus drew his heart – compelling not repelling.
Levi now realizing a new world was opening.
This Jesus was not self-righteous, harsh or far away.
He was accused of helping and befriending sinners.
Now Levi sits before his custom house
Hearkening and hoping.
No longer is it buying, selling or tolling.
Levi finds less heart for his custom house.
However, he dares not hope to be a disciple.
Jesus came closer, fixing on him that look of agape love,
Searching the inmost depth of the soul.
Surprised and speechless, Levi heard the words
“Follow Me” coming from Jesus.
Immediately, he left his custom house behind.
