Olivia ends up beside a strange passenger.
Olivia Tasser opened the overhead to put away her carry-on. When she sat down she noticed the seat beside her.
“I’m sure that seat was empty when I came in. It was still empty when I put away my luggage. I must have just missed their arrival.”
She took her seat and smiled toward the short figure holding a swaddled bundle. The woman nodded without turning. She wore a hooded garment that hid her face and was not very talkative.
“Is this your first ride in an airplane?”
The figure nodded.
“So I guess the baby is on its first flight too?”
She nodded again.
“Don’t worry, if you need me to, I can take the baby for a while.”
She clutched the bundle tighter in fear. Olivia decided it might be better to leave her seat mate alone. There was something strange about her.
“All she does is stare out the window. Maybe she is so afraid she has to watch the engines to make sure they’re working,” Olivia said under her breath.
A little hand poked out of the bundle and waved. When Olivia saw it, she blinked. She could swear it was scaly and claw-like. The mother quickly tucked it back in place.
“Well at last! There’s Daddy!” the mother said, waving out the window with a purple gloved hand. Her voice was raspy like she had a cold.
“Nice meeting you. But my son and I have decided we don’t like riding in a plane,” she said politely, still not looking at Olivia.
With that, the pair vanished. Bemused, Olivia moved over until she could see out the window. There on the wing, was the family. As she watched, they disappeared into the one of the engines. In minutes, it stopped.
“Gremlins!” shrieked Olivia.
