The Anchor

I find peace as my mind’s chatter
becomes numb from its daily assault
from things that don’t really matter.
In the end, it’s my own damn fault.

The headlines each day seem to blare
that the world is in great jeopardy.
Each utterance designed to scare
and boost ratings for what’s on T.V.

It’s not that I’m not a believer.
We face many problems, it’s true.
And yes – I’m an overachiever
but there’s only so much I can do.

I’ve decided that, rather than rancor,
my response will be doing my part.
By example I’ll be a strong anchor
that inspires others to take heart.

There isn’t a magic solution
to cure all the world’s ills at once
like changes in climate, pollution,
or a President who is a dunce.

Each day I can make the world better
if only around where I live.
I’ll pay back, no longer a debtor.
I’ll no longer take. I will give.
