What does a dash hold?
(What they didn’t say about your life.)
They never filled in the dash
Between 1936 and 2018.
There is so much more to be said
For your life
After the first screaming breath
And before the last gasping breath
That they didn’t put
In 26 short lines
About how you lived
And who you truly were,
So today I will lay back
And look at your picture
And remember all the things
You taught me,
In the small part of the dash
That I shared with you,
Because what they didn’t say
Was who you are to me
And may God help us
All through the tears
And grief,
And let us fill
Our dash with the things
They didn’t say.
