A fictional poem about what many people think it is like to turn 18. Lines: 18
Word Count: 169

I’m 18 years old today,
I can make my own way.
I am not who I was yesterday.

I’m stepping out for the very first time,
In this moment as the church bells chime.
It’s time to start my life changing climb.

At the age of 18, I will decide,
My future is mine, and I won’t be denied.
I no longer need those on whom I once relied.

I can join the army if that’s what I wish,
I can play basketball, swish, swish.
I can be a chef with my famous specialty dish.

The sky is the limit, that’s what they say,
I’ll prove them wrong, starting today.
But first, I think I’ll stop and pray.

The sky is where I won’t stop,
I’ll keep going until I’m on top,
And from star to star I will hop.

Some negative Nancy’s try to tell me I’m wrong,
But they don’t know that I’m really strong.
When the time is right, I’ll find the place where I belong.
