A memory of being a poor single dad but trying not to let my daughter know we had no money
Emily and I
had a Burger King picnic
at a little park on a day
when I could only afford
one 2.99 value meal.

I have a clipped picture
laminated and saved as a bookmark
that shows her smiling
and offering her half
of the burger back to me.

Not full,
she was not believing,
even at four,
that dad only wanted
a bite of burger and no fries.

Being poor is no picnic,
But that sticks out in my mind
As the best ever picnic.
