How to Cover Blemishes and Create Flawless Skin

We all yearn for glowing, gorgeous, perfect skin, but no matter how much we love the skin that we're in, we are all prone to occasional breakouts. Even though none of us want bad skin, there are ways to conceal and camouflage dark spots and blemishes to create a look of radiant, healthy skin. It's all in the makeup application and technique!

Our complexion is important to us and obtaining what resembles perfect skin with makeup requires a working knowledge of color theory, your skin type (dry, oily, normal, combination), and cosmetic formulations. A cover stick will hide a blemish in a different way than a cream foundation, and applying powder over a concealer helps to maintain a look of blemish free skin.

When hiding and covering blemishes, you should use products such as concealers, foundations, cover sticks, and powders. Although makeup can diminish the appearance of blemishes, it doesn't flatten raised bumps or smooth out flaky skin. If you need to conceal these types of breakouts, apply vaseline to the blemished areas at night before going to sleep, and you'll see a difference in the redness and size of the bump when you wake up in the morning.

For covering blemishes correctly, the color of the concealer is key. Make sure to use a concealer, foundation, or cover stick in a shade that is identical to or matches your natural skin tone. For pale, alabaster skin an ivory tone works wonders. For darker skin types use beige, yellow, or a deep tan. Don't go with white based concealers, as these shades don't blend well into your natural skin tone and can leave a gray appearance.

When covering dark circles under your eyes, dab a cream concealer and foundation over the dark circles to even out your skin tone and give you a more "awake" look. If you are trying to hide redness or red, inflamed blemishes, too much white won't achieve your desired results. Yellow toned cosmetics are best for covering red spots and blemishes.

The best tools to use for applying cover-up are brushes, makeup sponges, Q-tips, and your fingertips (provided you have just washed your hands.). If you are using a makeup brush, make sure to use a small brush with a pointed tip. The smaller the brush, the more control you will have over covering the blemish, making it look invisible. A large brush will apply too much cover-up at one time, or extend the makeup over healthy skin. You want to work only on the breakout. Once this is finished, blend the cover-up into your own skin by adding a light translucent face powder. Voila, skin that looks clear, blemish free, and oh so pretty!

If you have a large blemish, a press translucent face powder (in the color of your skin tone) on top of the flaw using a makeup sponge or cotton ball will hide the spot. Apply enough powder to cover the blemish and then blend the powder into your clear skin to even it out. When people look at you, the redness of the breakout will be covered, matching your skin tone, and the flaw won't be noticeable.

Every day we want to put our best foot, and face, forward. Healthy, glowing skin gives you a boost of confidence and a feeling of power. Health and beauty matter, and even though we all deal with pesky blemishes from time to time, an occasional breakout doesn't have to steal your joy or your sunny mood! Hold your head high with a flawless skin attitude!
