A brief poem about the education system.
There are birds in the attic
Of that I am sure
As im trying to sleep
They chirp loudly, bumping into the walls

They don’t sing, more scream
It’s a more corrupt song
They seem frightened or startled
Not seen the sun in too long

They wish for the sky
The endless blue
The clouds that are fluffy
Each road, each hedge, all new

They have never been stuck
In such confined space
Without fresh air to breath
Never to see another face

I go to let them out
Then I sit, and think
Are they much different
Then the fish in my sink

I had captured them, fair
And swim, they could
I had taken them from the corals
And sea in which they lived

So that I could see them
Day after day
Their beautiful corals
Inspect the eggs they might lay

And they looked happy
Enough as they swam
In circles, granted
They would never reach new land

So I think, if I keep those birds in a box
I can see them so often
Keep them safe
Unharmed and soft

I will feed them grain
Which I buy from a store
Nothing too fancy
Which could make their mind soar

Thinking about it,
are they much different from a class
You might teach in a school
Subjects like art, history, how to run fast

You teach them, yes
But not enough, you see
You hide things deemed irrelevant
That might make them believe

In something new,
exciting and fresh
To keep them young
Discovering, and at their best

So you dull their talent
Ban their joy
Make them fit in the lines
‘A barbie could never be a boys toy’

Yes, those birds
One day they might die
Leave a horrible smell
As they rot where they lie

But at least I could watch them
And keep them safe
Safe from discovering
How our world is so great.
