A teen working his summer job.
We All Scream
Crane had managed to get a summer job that kept him outside and meeting people.
“I don’t make much money, but I can keep in shape and get a tan!” he told his friends.
After the first week, he was on his way home. He was late for supper, something which no sixteen year old boy likes to be; so he decided to take a shortcut over the covered bridge. He could see something glowing at the end and almost changed his mind.
“It’s nothing, ignore it!” he told himself.
As he came closer, the figure turned out to be a ghost. It began to moan and wail. The terrifying sounds scared him so badly, Crane jumped off his conveyance and let it go at full speed toward the specter. He plugged his ears and shut his eyes waiting for the crash.
As he hung by his fingers from the edge of the bridge, the teen managed to peek through a hole in one of the weathered boards that enclosed it. To his amazement, the spirit leaped onto the careening vehicle. It began to pedal the three wheeled ice-cream truck faster and faster.
Crane could hear the bell ringing madly as the ghostly driver began to scream. As it did so, a hole opened in the ground at the end of the bridge. Fire and smoke spewed out.
The teen could smell brimstone too. Spirits of all shapes and sizes poured out the opening and eagerly snatched the treats from the freezer compartment of his cart. He could hear them chanting the traditional verse that he vowed he would never use again.
“You scream, I scream…”
Crane didn’t wait to hear anymore.
“I don’t know what I’m going to tell my boss, but right now who cares?”
