Animal empathy poem.
Wolf

up in the highnesses he prowls
padding the soft snow
pacing pacing pacing

footprints lead to a hole
in the mountain
where his she-wolf gluts
on his care for her

she is his wholeness
his being centres
round her alone
snuggling in her fur
at night against the cold

the glances of humans
so called fear of him

in the day he
hunts eyes sharp
for potential prey
gripped by fear in snow

while she stirs
her brood bloodwarm
with affection
waiting for his
rearrival

at the exit
she hears his howl
of recognition
the bond of
the voiced love
they share

shaking the hearts
of strangers
in wild empty places
and in log cabins

she shivers free of snow
and childlappings
and replies
with the chilling call
of her heart to his
as night falls

like gentle snow
in a petrified landscape
