I have a lot of books in my house.
The books on my shelf,
usually prim and placid,
clamor at me today
as I vacuum.

They reminisce on our past:
poems well loved,
stories never finished,
wisdom forgotten.

Why do you tidy
they say,
when no one is coming?
They tempt me to lift,
heft, flip through,
read a word or two …

After all,
no one is coming,
and dust waits patiently
while books are restless.

What could it hurt to spend
one gray afternoon rearranging,
putting everyone back in
their proper places?
