Collecting maple sap in Vermont
I remember the snow clumps,
clinging to the branches
Of the maple trees
in my back yard.

As I tapped the tree,
to drain the sap
some snow would fall,
as I placed the bucket.

Days later we collected the buckets,
bringing them to the sugar house.
Boiled the sap down,
‘till it was thick.

Collecting that white snow,
piled high in a dish.
we poured the syrup,
Crystalizing.
