a short poem about survival
Tribute to Maya

When I remember those days.
I remember those ways.
They bring tears to my eyes.
They bring whys to my mind.

I know what’s behind me.
I don’t need a memory.
It can be blackest black.
Nothing gained looking back.

Today there’s a grayness.
The clouds soft and tasteless.
Sometimes I lose my way.
Today is just today.

I mend from violence.
I crawl out of silence.
Tomorrow is alive.
Nothing like surviving.

The sun warms even me.
What’s left of used to be.
Beating heart still inside.
Alive and well I rise.
