Chapter 3

Saturday finally arrived, bringing with it the anticipation of Mini-golf and Kallee’s new addiction Laughlan. He had sat next to her in every class they shared in which he could. He walked her to her classes, always hugging her tight before walking off with the whispered “Mo Chridhe” she had come to live for. Kallee had no idea what it meant, or even what language it was, yet her heart melted whenever Laughlan called her it.

Kallee had spent her morning at the piano practicing for her classes, trying to keep her mind off of Laughlan. He had called her every night since that first call. Laughlan always stayed on the phone with her humming until she fell asleep. Somehow in the space of a week, Kallee found herself craving more of this tall handsome blonde.

The day dragged on as Kallee kept finding ways to distract herself. Cleaning, baking, homework she’d done everything she could find to keep her busy. Her hair was done up and her face painted lightly with makeup. She wore a simple pair of cotton pants and a V-neck shirt with a flowery design. Looking herself over in the full-size mirror on the back of her bedroom door she grinned.

The clock read 6:25 as Kallee paced back and forth in the living room. She’d grown comfortable with Laughlan but this would be the first time they’d hung out in person while not in school. She was an excited mess her mind swirling in circles. She recalled his comment from the first time he had called her. “I don’t know if I can pick one at the moment perhaps on Saturday we can experiment and help me make up my mind” he had said to her. Now she couldn’t help but wonder if he’d follow through with his tease.

The doorbell rang pulling Kallee from her thoughts. She walked slowly to the door taking her time so she didn’t appear too eager. Laughlan stood on the other side of the door a grin on his face. Kallee gave him a once over noticing how hot he looked today. Laughlan was wearing jeans, a dark blue tee with a white button down which was left unbuttoned.

“Are you ready to have your butt whooped at mini-golf” Kallee asked Laughlan.

“I believe you meant to say ‘I’m ready to have my but kicked’ cause let’s be honest I am going to win tonight.” Kallee had a mischievous grin on her face as she replied

“Oh yeah? You want to bet on it?”

“Name your terms!” Laughlan challenged. Kallee was shocked she hadn’t expected him to actually make a bet with her.

“You first” she stalled. needing to think of what to gamble with.

“Oh that is easy I win I get a kiss!” Apparently, he was prepared for this.

“Alright, if I win I want to hear you actually sing, not just hum!”

“You drive a hard bargain” he took her hand as they walked off towards his car. Kallee felt her heart melt as he opened the passenger door of his sapphire blue Toyota Corolla. She climbed in doing up her seat belt while he closed the door walking quickly to the driver's side to get in himself. She loved the fact that he was such a gentleman a quality lost on most men her age.

“So where do you want to go for dinner Kall?”

“Somewhere Italian if that's okay?”

“Of course. I know a great little Italian restaurant not too far from the mini-golf place.” Laughlan drove them to the nearby restaurant called ‘Mama Italiano’

“It looks charming” Kallee commented as Laughlan pulled into a parking stall.

“I think you’ll really enjoy it. Now stay put for a moment” he said turning off the car and undoing his seat belt. Kallee waited as he got out of the car and scurried quickly to her door. He opened the door and offered her his hand to help her get out. Kallee giggled slightly as she put her hand in his climbing out of the car.

“You are such a gentleman you know that right?”

“My ma would be proud to hear that.” They walked hand in hand to the door of the restaurant. Kallee felt like she was walking on air. Was it really only a few days since she met this fascinating gentleman? It was like a dream for her as he opened the door to the restaurant ushering her in before him.

Laughlan too was finding it wonderfully fulfilling having Kallee’s slender hand in his own. His hand dwarfed hers in comparison but it was like they were meant to be together. Two halves of a puzzle piece that somehow fit together perfectly. Laughlan didn’t want to ever let go of this stunning girl next to him.

“Welcome to Mama Italiano, Just the two of you tonight?” The hostess greeted.

“Yeah just the two, thanks.”

“Of course, right this way.” They followed the hostess to a corner of the restaurant. They sat down opposite each other in the booth offered to them

“Here are your menus, and your waiter, Deven, will be right with you. Enjoy your meal.” the hostess walked off leaving the two of them sitting alone. They both opened their menus pursuing them in quiet. A moment later their waiter walked up to the table

“How are we this evening?” The waiter asked.

“We are doing good” Laughlan answered for them.

“Awesome, can I start you off with anything to drink?”

“Water is fine for me. Kallee do you want anything to drink?”

“Water will be good for me too.”

“Perfect, are we ready to order or do you need some more time?” Laughlan looked at Kallee since he already knew what he wanted.

“I’m ready if you are,” Laughlan told her. She looked down at the menu quickly confirming what she wanted

“I think I am good to order.”

“Great what can I get for you?”

“I’ll take the Chicken fettuccine,” Kallee stated handing her menu to the waiter.

“Alright, and for you sir?”

“I’d like the Chicken parm please.” Laughlan placed his order as well giving the waiter his menu too.

“Okay so that is one Chicken parm and one Chicken fettuccine I will get those out to you as soon as possible and I will be right back with a salad and some breadsticks for you guys.” The waiter walked off towards the kitchen leaving the two of them alone once more.

“So Kall, how did you sleep last night?” Kallee had been expecting this question. It had become a habit for Laughlin to ask her how she had slept after their second night of falling asleep on the phone. She smiled she liked that he cared.

“It was good, I haven’t had a nightmare in a few days so that's good. I guess.”

“Well, that is a good thing. How are your classes going?”

“They are going good. I have a huge paper due in English next week that I am only half done with. You?”

“It is going pretty good for me too. The men’s choir has a concert in a few weeks. So that's one of my main focuses currently” Their waiter reappeared placing a basket of breadsticks on the table. Kallee grabbed a breadstick with lighting speed sinking her teeth into it. Laughlan smiled as he watched Kallee practically devour her breadstick with her face lighting with enjoyment. He chuckled

“I see you’re a fan of breadsticks” Kallee gave him a sheepish grin, swallowing her current bite.

“Maybe just a little” she admitted when her mouth was emptied. They enjoyed a comfortable conversation about life while waiting for their food. Which arrived a few minutes after the breadsticks. They were both so involved in eating that the conversation dwindled during the meal. Shortly after they had both finished the waiter came up asking if they wanted dessert. They told him they didn’t so he left them with the check. Laughlan took it before Kallee even moved. Taking out his wallet he pulled a card out. he put it in the folder with the receipt handing it back to the waiter.

“Hey!” Kallee protested “I thought we agreed to split the check!” Laughlan reached across the table grabbing one of her hands.

“Yes, we did, but what kind of gentleman would I be if I didn’t pay for all of it?”

“The kind that honors his agreements” Kallee teased him. She didn’t mind him paying despite her comment earlier in the week about not wanting this to be a date she definitely liked the Idea of dating Laughlan.

“I was going to let you pay for yourself, but then I realized that I want to date you too much to allow that.” Laughlan watched the look of surprise overtake Kallee’s face. His smile widened a feeling of complete admiration overcoming him.

“Did... Did you just say what I think you said?” Kallee stuttered a little completely surprised at his honesty. She could see that he meant what he said by the way he was looking admiringly at her.

“If you’re asking if I just admitted to wanting to date you the answer is yes.” He was still holding her hand as he spoke he started to rub circles with his thumb on the palm of her hand. “Look Kallee, I know you said you wanted to take this slow and to just start with being friends, But I just can’t! It is like eating a potato chip, you can never just eat one. I can’t get enough of you. So yes I want to date you.” Before Kallee could respond to Laughlans declaration the waiter returned with Luaghlan’s card thanking them for dining at Mama Italiano.

Without letting go of Kallee’s hand Laughlan stood up. Kallee followed him, She kept quiet needing to think and wanting to wait until the privacy of Laughlans car before continuing the conversation. Laughlan again opened all of the doors for Kallee. Keeping a tight hold on her hand until she was comfortably seated in the car. Before he let go of her hand he raised it to his lips gently placing a kiss on her knuckles.

Kallee took a deep breath trying to calm herself while watching Laughlan walk to the driver's side. This was all happening so fast, She wasn’t sure what she wanted. Sure the thought of dating Laughlan was very appealing. But she had only known him less than a week. It frightened and excited her all at once. Once laughlan was in the car ready to drive them to the mini-golf course Kallee spoke up.

“Laughlan, I can’t get enough of you either! So I am okay calling this a date, and I hope there are more to come. I mean let's be honest here neither of us has been able to go a single day without at least talking since that day in the library! I’m fast becoming dependant upon having you in my life.” Laughlan reached over with one hand grabbing hers.

“And I am dependant upon you Mo Chridhe” he brought her hand to his lips kissing it once more. He didn’t let go of her hand, but set their joined hands in her lap, as silence fell upon them. Neither one of them wanting to ruin the moment of discovery.

They arrived at the Mini-golf course only a few minutes later. Laughlan after parking the car pulled her hand to his lips once more. Before letting go to get out. Kallee didn’t need to be told to stay put this time. Her mind was melting into a puddle of goo. The feel of his lips on her hand had stopped her mind. Making it hard for her to argue that she wasn’t falling for him

Laughlan opened her door reaching for her hand once more. He loved the way it felt to hold her hand. They walked to the front gate of ‘Putt around the clock’ the mini-golf course.

“Are you all prepared to kiss me? Cause I am going to totally win!” Laughlan teased.

“Yeah right, you better have your singing voice warmed up Mr. dreamboat.” Since the revelation that he wanted to date her, and his continued use of “Mo Chridhe” Kallee had decided he too needed a nickname. Dreamboat had been the winner.

“Dreamboat eh?” he questioned

“Yup. I mean if you are going to keep calling me by a nickname I figured I better come up with one for you. Hence Dreamboat” They reached the ticket counter at that point so he didn’t get a chance to reply.

“Hello, welcome to Putt around the clock, how may I help you?”

“We’d like to play some mini-golf please,” Laughlan told the cashier

“Alright that will be 10$ for the two of you.” the cashier said punching something on the screen in front of her. Laughlan pulled out his wallet handing the cashier a 10$ bill. The cashier took the money putting it in the register.

“Here are your scorecards with a map of the course on the back. And your balls. The pencils are right there for you and I will just be a second while I get your clubs.” the cashier told them. Laughlan handed Kallee her half of the items. She flipped the scorecard over to look at the map. Letting out a giggle she pointed at it indicating that Laughlan should take a look. He was baffled at her amusement at first until he took looked at the map and laughed too. The course was laid out just like a clock with 12 holes and the water features in the middle looked like clock hands. Which must be why they named it what they did.

“Here you are, One tall club and one shorter club. Have fun” the cashier said handing them the clubs.

“Alright, short stuff. You better pucker up cause I'm about to win me a bet.” Laughlan taunted.

“As if. I am going to whoop your butt into next year Dreamboat.” She retorted before skipping off to the first hole. Laughlan Laughed heartily at the goofy amazing redhead that had just run off. He watched as Kallee set her ball down on the tee of the first hole.

“Careful you don’t want to hit the ball out of the park” Laughlan teased her.

“Hey, no distracting me that’s cheating.” Kallee giggled as she took her first shot. Her ball landed close to the hole, giving her a good chance at making it under par for this hole. Kallee stepped out of the way letting Laughlan take his turn.

“Let's see you beat that Mr. dreamboat.” Laughlan looked over at her and winked.

“Oh don’t worry I will.” Laughlan’s ball went too far bounced off the wall and came back towards him. In the end, Kallee sunk her ball into the hole after her second chance. It took Laughlan the par amount of 3 to get his ball in the hole.

“Seems like I'm going to get to hear you sing after all.” Kallee provoked him.

“Don't count on it, This was just a warm-up hole for me.” They moved on to the next hole. They bantered back and forth as they went from one hole to the next. Each one enjoying every moment of the game. When they reached the final hole Laughlan was in the lead.

“See I told you that I would win! There is no way you can beat me!”

“You haven’t even gone yet. It could take you like 8 tries to get it in.”

“Yeah yeah, you keep telling your self that.” Kallee walked up to the tee putting her ball down. She lined up her club taking a breath then hit the ball with the club. The ball rolled up the hill and right into the hole. Kallee let out a squeal of excitement.

“Hole in one, good job Kall!”

“Your turn Mr. Dreamboat.” laughlan lined up his shot and took it. The ball rolled half way up before stopping and falling back down. He tried again with the same result. The third time he tried he managed to get the ball up the ramp. Where it stopped an inch from the hole. Kallee laughed enjoying the look of frustration on Laughlans face.

“Looks like I am going to get to hear you sing!” Laughlan gave her a joking glare. He hit his ball in the hole ending the game.

“Indeed it does. Well played!” He took her club from her holding it with his in one of his hands as he reached for her hand to hold again. Returning the clubs to the cashier they walked back to the car.

“Do you have a piano at your place or am I going to have to serenade you acapella?” laughlan asked her.

“I have an electric one that I can bring out of my bedroom for you to use.” she offered.

“Perfect, Well, what do you say I take you home and sing for you now?”

“That sounds good to me.” She said as laughlan opened the car door for her. Kissing her hand again before he shut the door. It didn’t take them long to reach Kallee’s apartment. They walked hand in hand to the door. Kallee unlocked it opening it up letting Laughlan in. Thankfully her roommates were out for the night.

“You can sit down on the couch and I will go get my piano for you.” she walked to her room to get the piano. It took her a moment to get it unplugged and gathered up. Taking it to the front room she set it down on the coffee table. Laughlan helped her to get it set up where he could play for her.

“Okay Kall, you sit down right here.” he pointed to a spot in front of him. “I want to be able to see you while I sing.” So she sat down on the coffee table Looking up into his emerald eyes. Laughlan stood behind the piano he pulled out his phone “Let me just find some sheet music for the song I want to sing”

“Take your time.” she watched as he typed on his phone. Less than a minute later he set his phone down where he could see it easily.

“Alright. This one is just for you.” he played the intro of the song trying to keep his nerves under control. He took a breath right before his entrance to sing.

“Wise men say only fools rush in

But I can't help falling in love with you

Shall I stay?

Would it be a sin

If I can't help falling in love with you?

Like a river flows surely to the sea

Darling, so it goes

Some things are meant to be

Take my hand, take my whole life too

For I can't help falling in love with you

Like a river flows surely to the sea

Darling, so it goes

Some things are meant to be

Take my hand, take my whole life too

For I can't help falling in love with you

For I can't help falling in love with you”

His voice was that of a rich bass singer. Much like the original singer of that song Elvis. Kallee felt butterflies in her stomach, as she listened to him sing about falling in love. Kallee stood up walking over to him as he finished singing. She was grinning, He was a good singer and she couldn’t wait to hear him sing again. Kallee was standing in front of Laughlan now. Reaching out she put her hand on his bicep.

“Look Laughlan, I know I won the bet and I truly enjoyed you serenading me. Despite that, I was thinking ...” She trailed off unable to finish her thoughts out loud. Laughlan looked down into her turbulent eyes. His heart rate started to increase rapidly as he put his hands on her waist. The tension between them grew as Laughlan pulled Kallee close. Suddenly Kallee looked down, unable to look at him. She knew he had read her thoughts, it unnerved her like no other. Laughlan crocked a finger under her chin gently tilting her head up so he could look into her eyes.

“Kallee, I need you to keep breathing now. I can’t have you passing out on me when I kiss you.” His voice was soft and full of desire. Laughlan moved his hand from her chin to where it was now cupping her cheek. Slowly he lowered his lips towards her other cheek. When his lips touched her check she felt her blush deepen. Her legs were becoming unstable as his lips trailed kisses along her cheekbone towards her lips. He took his time letting each new kiss linger before placing the next kiss.

Kallee snaked the hand that had been on his arm up to his neck. She let her other hand glided up to tangle its self in his hair. Her breathing was ragged and the feel of his lips made her skin tingle. The feeling of her skin against his lips was intoxicating, he wanted to kiss every inch of her. Moving his hand from Kallee’s cheek he placed it on the small of her back pulling her even closer. Only inches separated them now as he placed a kiss on the tip of her nose. Kallee giggled at that as he continued his kisses on her other check.

Sparks exploded in Kallee’s mind as Laughlan finally pressed his lips to hers. Laughlan too was experiencing fireworks as the world seemed to disappear around them. He felt her fingers running through his hair which was driving him crazy! He closed the little distance that was between them kissing her deeper. Kissing Kallee was the most amazing feeling in the world. He didn’t want to stop, but the gentleman in him finally broke the kiss. Laughlan rested his forehead against hers their noses touching.

“WOW....” it came out gravelly like it was from deep in her chest.

“Wow indeed.” Laughlan agreed. “Mo Chridhe, you are so amazing”

“So are you Mr. dreamboat.” They both chuckled.

“I need to go” he whispered in her ear.

“Will you still call me tonight?” Kallee’s fingers were still playing with his hair while they were talking. Laughlan leaned in close to her lips again centimeters away from kissing her once more.

“But of course,” Kallee felt the warmth of his breath on her lips as he spoke. Longing grew in her heart she needed to feel his kiss again. Kallee pushed up on to her tippy toes closing the space between them. It was a soft gentle kiss, but still full of passion. Laughlan pulled away from her placing his lips on her cheek again. “Kallee,” he began before kissing her other cheek too “I really need to go now”

“I know, Thanks for such an amazing date, Mr. Dreamboat.” She told him as he walked with her still wrapped in his arms towards the door.

“You’re welcome, Mo Chridhe” he whispered before pressing his lips to hers in a good-bye kiss. When he pulled back he untangled himself from her arms letting her go too “I will call you as soon as I am home” He opened the door walking out of it into the night.
