explanation as to why I need to write
I don't remember when
I started writing poetry
I know I used to write short stories
from the moment I could think
I guess I started writing poetry
when I started getting sad
all the time
for no reason
feeling so low I could barely breathe
weight on my chest
stones in my lungs
I think I started writing poetry
when my mind wouldn't shut up
so many doubts and emotions
the words burrowed under my skin
and into my brain
and the only way to stop the itching
was to write it all out
I started writing poetry
when my feelings got too strong
when they leaked from my eyes
at three in the morning
after I had gone to bed hours earlier
just tossed and turned
with the movement of my thoughts
so many at once I couldn't keep track
wondering of my own worth
at an age where I should only have worried
about what to wear
or who to sit with at lunch
I could see no meaning
so I created it myself
through words
and sometimes even then
nothing could stop the oncoming dread
that maybe I'm here for no reason at all
maybe these words will never be seen
maybe there's no purpose to any of this
but now I've come to realize
I'm writing for myself and no one else
I will survive and I will write
I don't remember when
I started writing poetry
But now I'll never stop
