“The past is a foreign country; they do things differently there.” — L.P. Hartley
The past is a foreign country;
they do things differently there.
         L.P. Hartley

It has a peculiar accent,
a studied enunciation,
each word spoken
as though by poets.

It dresses in meticulous
period costume and knows
what every stitch intends,
the colors of mourning,
how to beckon or surrender
with a handkerchief.

It doesn’t keep perspective,
despairing over plot points
and conflicts that will all resolve,
even if everyone has to die.

I see it sideways
through black and white,
wondering where the people go
when I’m done looking.
