Jaycee and Meg face a truth together.
“Stop lying to me.”

He hunched his shoulders, rounding away from my voice. His long jaw tightened and I saw a muscle in his neck jump. “I’m not.”

Te conozco, Juan,” I murmured. “I know when things are real. I’m not stupid.”

“Don’t call me that.” He turned back to the motorcycle he was repairing. “And I don’t speak Spanish, Meg.”

I sighed and stepped closer. “Please, Jaycee,” I whispered as I ran my hands over his shoulders. He weakly tossed his wrench to the pavement beside the bike. “I can’t do this alone. Please.”

“You’ll hate me.” His voice came out rough and gritty, like motor oil gone too long without changing. “You all will.”

“Nothing,” I hissed, “will make me hate you.” I turned him and he leaned down, surrendered and kissed me when I wound my arms around his neck. I tasted tears. “Just tell me the truth.”

“My daddy ain’t white,” he whispered after a second. “Coal black asshole got my mom pregnant and skipped town. I could pass as Puerto Rican.” He shuddered and I pushed my nose into his neck, waiting. “I’m half black, Meg.”

“The club… they were stretching the charter to let me in as Hispanic. They find out I’m black--”

“Fuck the club.” He twitched and I smiled at the incredulous look on his face. “I love you, Jaycee. I don’t care if your daddy was a purple people eater. Nobody in this club can say you haven’t been loyal.” He opened his mouth and I kissed him again. “You belong here,” I said, shaking him a little. “Who cares where you came from?”

A weak laugh slipped out of him and Jaycee hugged me tightly, rocking. “Thank you,” he whispered. “I love you.”
