a dream I have often about my spirit ancesters, in eagle form
There upon a jagged cliff,
a painted horse stands
majestic in the wind
and I, an Ojibwe girl
gaze into a green valley below
and the Ottawa River flows
flowing to the horizon
once this was our land
from coast to coast
once we roamed and hunted
up above eagles soar in an azure sky
these are the spirits of my ancestors
floating and drifting silently
watching
and down, down falls an eagle feather
that I catch in my hand
a gift- for an eagle feather is never taken
and I, a mere Ojibwe girl
upon a painted horse
place it in my long flowing raven hair
that blows and flows like a river
in this dream . . .
