Counter Clockwise, or Not

Why do we have counter clockwise
Why not just proceed forward
And, anyways – who is the wiser?

Why does the marry-go-round go counter, except in England
The clock forward, except when we "fall" back
Sometimes you turn the faucet handle clockwise
Sometimes you turn the faucet handle counter

The can opener handle goes clockwise; the opener, counter
The gas cap on my car, not sure
It seems to go both ways to lock it!

Earth turns counter clockwise
Planets move counter clockwise like the sun's rotation
If gears are meshed gears (adjacent) they move opposite
Water flows clockwise, Northern; counter at Southern hemisphere.

It could be said, dialwise instead of clockwise
Sundial being our first clocks
But, why wise? Who is the wiser?
