How the flora and fauna of a pond can speak to us of seasonal changes...
Reeds

They rock-a-bye like babies
in a cradle do, sweeping aside
the breezes that abide upon
the watery plain that hides
nothing from the sight
of the prying few.
The hour has come as silently
it is heard across
the slate-gray waters
of the inland bay.
"Winter is coming",
says the urgent whisper
seen in the signs
of the lateness of the hour
as red-winged blackbirds flew,
the fluff of sausage-like heads
bids them goodbye, it's down
to be used in the beds
of the marsh's citizens
for in that singular moment,
the first flurries leave
their lofty gray vaults,
alighting as a fresh reminder
that not only is Winter arriving
but that Fall bids us all
adieu ...
