Abandonment from an inability to adapt
Once in the savannahs of Africa, in a time before history, there lived three giraffes. Their names were Isabelle, Alice, and Zoey. Zoey's past herd had abandoned her, so she was desperate for companionship. Without friends to keep her safe from predators, Zoey would surely become lunch for a cheetah. Luckily, she met Isabelle and Alice at giraffe school, where young giraffes went to learn to forage for food.

Isabelle, Alice, and Zoey enjoyed each other's company. When joking around with Alice and Isabelle, Zoey felt happy and didn't worry about predators.

The three giraffes still had their moments, though. Zoey was the most insecure of the three, often pushing the other two away aggressively out of instinct whenever they came across a patch of grass. Rightfully so, Isabelle and Alice would get angry whenever Zoey did this, but they still stayed by her side because they genuinely thought Zoey was worth supporting.

One day, however, times changed along with the environment of the savannah. The savannah grass was now scarce, but the Baobab trees were abundant. New types of giraffes with longer necks arrived. The short-necked giraffes noticed how easily the long-necked giraffes acquired sustenance from the Baobab tree leaves. Isabelle and Alice became increasingly desperate for food and eventually adapted long necks like the rest of the giraffes.

Zoey, however, was unwilling to adapt. Zoey liked herself the way she was, short neck and all. She figured that she could still suffice as long as Alice and Isabelle continued to care for her. Despite never being able to reach the Baobab tree leaves, Zoey tagged alongside Isabelle and Alice, who would bring down vegetation for Zoey to eat.

Bringing the food down for Zoey eventually became tiring for Alice and Isabelle as the constant movement was strenuous on their long necks. As Isabelle and Alice suffered through their discomfort, they began to think of Zoey as a burden. They both decided to discontinue assisting Zoey.

One day, while Zoey was tagging along, as usual, she asked Isabelle and Alice to bring her down some leaves from the Baobab tree. Alice and Isabelle refused. Zoey persisted with asking for their assistance, only to be denied time and time again. Growing ever more frustrated and hungry, Zoey continued begging and crying until she passed out from exhaustion. Alice and Isabelle left her alone to die of starvation.
