|Making it Work
“What the heck are you doing now?” Frank asked.
Pinky looked over. Frank was beginning to get on his last nerve. He stopped his run. “Look, I don’t know where you were before they stuck you in here, but you gotta stop this attitude or you’ll be making lots of enemies.”
“What? I just don’t get it. That’s all. What’s the point?”
“The point is I’m doing something. I’m exercising so I don’t turn into a fat slob. Plus, it gives me endorphins which make me feel good. And that’s good for you, because you’ve had a nasty attitude since you arrived. The others already think you’re a snob, and I’m beginning to agree with them.”
“I’m sorry. I just really wasn’t prepared for this.”
“How ‘prepared’ you gotta be? A roof over our heads, food, water, exercise... friends, if you don’t alienate everyone first...”
“I’m sorry. My life was so different before, I’m having trouble letting it go...”
“Well what was it like? Where were you?”
“I use to live in a palace, I had a ton of money, and my boss was a magician.”
“What’s a palace?”
“A big house... I had a sweet life, but then I made my boss really angry. It was really stupid.”
“Well, I do know what stupid is. So, what happened?”
“He turned all my money into sawdust and then he turned me into this...” Frank motioned to his body.
“Well, if you think you’re out of shape, you could try running, like I do. Not like there’s a lot else to do anyway. Climb on, try it.”
“I suppose...” Frank climbed up next to Pinky.
“So, what is this ‘money’ thing anyway?” Pinky asked as the two hamsters started running around the wheel, in the large cage, at the pet shop.
