The Necklace

Frank held up the necklace for twelve-year-old Anna to see.

“That doesn’t impress me.”

“I’m not trying to impress you, I’m trying to impress Kate.”

“I know she’s flashy but that’s gaudy.”

“It was in the window when we walked by this store. She said it was ‘gorgeous’ and that she intended to wear jewels like this every day, some day.”

“So, if you got married someday, you’ll have to buy them for her?”

“We’re only sixteen, I don’t think that’s an issue.”

“Do you think if you stay together she’ll give up things like that?”

“I never thought about it... I just thought she was really cute...”

“Girls!” he laughed, “I doubt that I’ll be marrying Kate someday.”

“Then why are you going out with her?”

“She’s cute! I plan on going out with lots of girls before I get married!”

“Well, how am I going to know what’s right for me, if I don’t try out all of them?”

“Shopping around huh?”

“I guess. When you and Mom went to get that dress, didn’t you try on a few before you decided?”

“Yeah, but that was a dress not a person.”

“A dress you’ll wear a few times. Once you marry, you’re stuck with that person forever!”

“Interesting take on marriage,” Anna said, “I guess you’re a bigger flake than I thought...”

“Thank you for that. I’ll remind you of this conversation when you’re sixteen.”

“It won’t matter, I already know I’m going to marry Alex.”

“Alex next door? Alex the dork?”

“That’s funny, I’ll remind you of that too!” Frank said laughing as he left his sister’s room.

He did remind her too. When he was the best man at her wedding to Alex, fourteen years later.

Frank, on the other hand, never married.
