The ostentatiousness detracts from the authenticity as far as I'm concerned.
Gold sparkled brightly from your altar
Credence table set with libation
Sunlight so softly cast rainbows
Through the stained glass art of the stations

The alabaster crucifix a reminder
That someone who loved us was broken
Eucharist and wine
In a chalice that shined
Praised as significant tokens

The stone on the floor echoed harshly
As we gathered in pews of oak wood
Exquisite angels carved all from granite
Stood watching as only statues could

The water they told me was Holy
Smelled stagnant there in the bowl
Your words spoke of sinning
Right from the beginning
I realized that’s how you controlled

I knew I didn't belong here
As you bedazzled in white satin frock
So much ritual and glamour
When Jesus had simply sat on a rock.
