A 50 line free-style poem, written for Dark Dreams Octoberfest, week 1.
A Twisted Grin

Swirling mists,
or is it steam?
A dream-state or
reality gone bad?
Here he treads,
dredging through your consciousness;
a warpath taken.
Forsaken, your life,
should his eyes
meet your own.
Gourded grin,
once a part of childish play,
today the threat,
so real...
so grim...
Are you really seeing him?
Elongated limbs,
chewed on, spat out;
a menace so tall,
even stooped and unsteady.
Are you ready to hide?
To run?
And then, by chance,
you realize
that the prize of a pumpkin head
has been filched,
by something headless,
That Halloween grin
with no warming glow,
but a white light
that's misted
as this creature is twisted;
forever seeking
and searching.
An appetite, insatiable;
a gnawing hunger,
a cavity that, for all his feasting,
will remain hollow
as he stalks and hunts
through this realm
Your one hope
for survival,
for making it through
to a new dawning day?
