a short poem about the personal costs of war
At Attention

Hold me.
A soldier stands at attention.
Tell me,
Is the war finally over?
It is.
Of us, they forgot to mention.

That’s not death you sense around me.
That’s me.

Stay forever in formation.
Burnt them.
All friends and foes in cremation.

Their ashes burn my eyes; my eyes.
I cry.

Your sin.
A relieved nation smiles in pride.
No war.
None worth the bloody sacrifice.

Memories, one could never wish.
