Nobody is Home

“So, the light is on, but nobody is home,” Jack said, concluding his story.

“What light?” Reggie asked.

“No, it’s a metaphor.”

“A meta for what? What’s a meta?”

“No. A metaphor, one word. It means you say something but it means something else.”

“Well, why don’t you just say what you mean in the first place?”

“I did, this was just an added on, funny comment, like a joke.”

“A joke. Ok, what did it mean?”

“The light is on, meant Janet was awake.”

“OK...?”

“It’s like, if the light on your front porch is on, see? You turn it on when you’re expecting somebody, right?”

“O... K...?”

“So, the implication is, she’s home, she’s awake, her brain is awake, she’s expecting thinking.”

“And?”

“Nobody is home. Nobody is thinking, Janet is not thinking, Janet was not using her brain at all.”

“So, you said that instead of saying Janet was being stupid?”

“I guess so.”

“Why would you do that?”

“Honestly, talking to you, I have no idea.”
