A tree that feeds on souls.
Octoberfest DDPC Round 34 Week 4 Prompt 10/25-10/31

The Hunger Tree

I know your evil intent,
dark heart of the forest,
warped and ancient hunter of men,
Old Man Oak, soul taker.
There’s yon one-eyed Jim Buckley
still puzzled at his entrapment,
disappeared two days ago
and now being sucked dry
of life in your wooden depths.
You’ll not catch me so easy
with spells to make me sleep
at your so treacherous roots,
to fall unwitting
into your abysslike maw.
Come, enchant me quick,
before my axe truncates your magic.
Sharpened this morning,
it yearns to let your sap flow
into the earth that formed you.
Is that Ned Forman over Jim,
silently screaming his horror
as your vile tendrils
search and drain his innards?
And by him, young Betty
Coleman, lost these many months.
Up above, I think that’s Ismael,
new to us all and innocent
of corruption like yours.
Lambs to the slaughter, these,
and the more loathsome your deed
in drawing them in.

Oh, I’ll not be so facile a prey.
Where to lay the blade for first cut?
Too many faces on this side I think;
over there looks inviting,
as if eager to provide a way
to end your murderous being.
It’s true my limbs are heavy,
the day’s toil weighing on me,
and this mist confused my eyes.
If I could rest a while,
just take a break, what harm would come?
Let Morpheus take the load from me,
renew my vowed intent,
and then I’ll wake and do the deed...
No! This haze that holds me so inert
prevents my chosen course;
it emanates from arborial will
to counteract…
something…
I can’t remember…
Let me sit and gather thought…
That’s better…
let me ease my bones…
and drift...and drift…
away.
