Solving the case of the thief who steals only one shoe.
Put out an all points bulletin
for there’s a shoe thief on the prowl.
He has an odd modus operandi,
and it makes me want to howl.
He never takes a pair of shoes—
a single shoe is all he wants to steal.
Now the stores are in uproars
about the lack of any public zeal…
for one shoe.

I am inspector Jean Cousteau;
this shoe case is assigned to me.
I’ve got the backing of Joe Q Public,
and I welcome all I see.
We’ve caught him on video camera,
but Shoe Thief’s face is but a blur.
Heel and sole, shoe thief on a roll,
his thieving spree causing quite a stir…
for one shoe.

Then it occurred to me at once
(and all the public did help a lot.)
Like a one-armed bandit in The Fugitive,
there is a way Shoe Thief can be caught.
Instead of one arm, maybe one foot
is the angle that we need to see.
Apprehended, Shoe Thief upended,
this peg leg case will always be…
One Shoe Do.
