Can be taken literally, but was written as a metaphor for a close friend with addiction
Sweet little dove
How lovely you are
So warm and so alive
I want nothing more
Than to hold you to my breast
So that I can feel your heat
And you can feel mine
So I can feel your softness
And admire your magnificence
Up close
But it's not what you want
So I open my hands
And set you free

As you fly I see the beauty that is you
And I watch helpless
As life will batter you
The hawks will come
They want your life
To make theirs better
I can only watch as you struggle
To be who you want to be
In spite of the danger

Sometimes you come back
To get warm again
Against my breast
But you never want to stay
So I let you go every time
Because I must
Even though it hurts me
To know that you go on
Without me
It is sad to watch you leave

For a time I see
How content you seem to be
Going back out into the danger
Instead of being safe with me
As much as I love you
I can only stand alone
Missing you
Wanting more
Knowing it will never be

Fly my sweet little dove
Be what you want to be
Because I love you so much
I will always set you free
