Entry for the 24 Syllable Contest 10/28 - Banal.
How Banal Can You Get?

She drawled at me,
“Oh, Dahling, how banal
of you. Cannot you see
that banal don’t rhyme with canal?”

24 Syllables
Note: I couldn’t resist this one. “Banal” has been my favourite word for as long as I can remember. When pronounced buh-NAHL (as I’m sure my lady friend in the poem does), it is so expressive of a lazy, superiority of attitude that it is useful beyond its actual meaning. Merriam-Webster comes in with the delightful information that the word can be pronounced in three ways, all of which are acceptable, apparently (and thus allowing the sting in the tail of my poem). BAY-nul and buh-NAL (which rhymes with “canal”) open the field for all sorts of interesting uses.
