Revisiting a fall day
Red and gold
Bits and pieces
Of fallen sunset

Scuttle, race
Each other
On Halloween

Followed by
Costumed children
Chasing after.

Back in my Utah years
Fragrant with Autumn’s
Dry, crackling laughter

Cries of ‘Trick or Treat’
Combine with ghostly breath
And witches tales.

Now distant memories
Drag slowly past
Into this seventieth year.

My new California paths
Offer no such magic
In this season’s silent worship.

In this less costumed year
When the richness of leaves
Red and gold seasoned tribute

Remain green fastened in place
Refusing to freely wander
Forgetting they were meant to fly.
