Dreams of an aspiring artist. A poem written for the Writer's Cramp prompt, 11/10/19.
Never Too Old!

I've always had a yearning
to learn to paint and draw,
but how to make a start on this
I've never been quite sure.

A flyer came along with post,
the answer it would seem;
for I could go and take a class
and so pursue this dream.

"You never get too old to learn,
to pick up a new skill;
you want to become an artist?
Well, show patience and you will!"

Those words echoed around my head
as I began to blend,
the colors on my palette
my mixing reached an end.

Brush now loaded up with paint,
I made the initial stroke,
then with much more confidence
my reluctance broke.

I painted in some bolder lines,
then some shade in paler hue
and this way I carried on
until inspection became due.

I heard murmurs of approval
as the tutor walked the class,
stopping to make comments
on the pictures she did pass.

Standing then beside me
I saw her face begin to frown;
"Hmm. Interesting," was all she said,
and left me feeling down.

I'm really not a painter,
and at sketching, I'm no good,
but it wasn't all for nothing;
that should be now understood.

For I might have left the canvas,
but I've painted up my hall;
and, feeling really brave and bold,
I papered a whole wall.
