A poem of a tragedy from years long ago at Christmas time.
Christmas in North Philly

Christmas Eve in North Philly

a wonderful time, but chilly.

The town is very quiet and still,

but there are many who are ill.

No one really knows what happened the next day,

it’s rumored as a natural disaster they say.

The fires, the gas, the death abound,

so many gone from all around.

This joyous day will be remembered for years,

by all who lived on and through the tears.

Near a century has passed away,

people’s hearts and souls are no longer grey.

Only faded records remain of that fateful day

when broken gas lines killed only those ill people that way.

It’s Christmas Eve in North Philly,

a wonderful time, but chilly.

Children asleep tucked into their beds,

as they all wait for Santa and his sled.

No more worries, only joyous sounds,

coming from all abound.
