A look at Ole Gunner Solskjær's reign as Manchester United manager.
|It's over a year since Ole Gunner Solskjær became manager of Manchester United and i think it's the perfect time to have a look back at his reign and it's many ups and downs.
1.A surprising choice!
On December 19th 2018,Ole Gunnar Solskjær was announced as the intrem replacement of Manchester United following the sacking of previous manager Jose Mourinho the previous day.
The Norwegian was beloved by United fans for 126 goals in 366 appearances for the club between 1996 and 2007 was never the less a odd choice for the role given his previous spell in English football had been in 2014 with Cardiff City, who only won 6 out of 21 games during him there and were relegated from the Premier league.
2.A perfect start.
Ole Gunner Solskjær's first game as manager would be against from former club Cardiff City at the Cardiff City stadium with United winning 5-1 and going to winning 10 of the Norwegian's first 12 games, scoring 28 goals and conceding just 7 in a run that including away victories over Tottenham Hotspur in the league and an FA cup win over Arsenal.
The run would be ended by Paris St-Germain on February 12th 2019 with a 2-0 defeat at Old Trafford in the two's Champions league last 16 first leg with United bouncing back to knock FA cup holders Chelsea out of the competition with a 2-0 at Stamford Bridge and a 0-0 draw with league leaders Liverpool at Old Trafford despite having to use all three substitutions in the first due to injuries.
3.One night in Paris and a sudden decline!
Despite suffering a 2-0 defeat at Old Trafford,Manchester United would defeat Paris St-Germain 3-1 away from home, advancing to the Champions league quarter-finals on aggregate thanks to a late Marcus Rashford penalty awarded by the Video Assistant Referee system.
Despite suffering defeats to Arsenal 2-0 in the league and an 2-1 FA Cup quarter-final to Wolves at Molineux Stadium,Solskjær would be named the club's permanent manager on March 28th 2019.
Despite a 2-1 win over Watford at Old Trafford in his first game as permanent boss, Solskjær's side have a disastrous end to the season, winning only 1 of their final 7 league games, including suffering a humiliating 4-0 defeat to Everton at Goodison park, finishing 6th and missing out on Champions league qualification and losing 4-0 on aggregate to Barcelona in the Champions league quarter-finals.
4.New season,same old problems!
Despite spending over 100 million pounds on new players including 80 million on Leicester city defender Harry Maguire and defeating Chelsea 4-0 at Old Trafford in their first game of the new season,United would endure their worst start to a league season since 1989,winning only 2 of their first 8 league games and just points out 9 out a possible 24.
Manchester United's season would have a surprising turning point with a 1-1 draw with unbeaten league leaders Liverpool at Old Trafford despite most expecting Utd to suffer a heavy defeat.
Despite inconsistent form,Solskjær's would got from 12th to 5th in the league table and defeat Tottenham Hotspur, now managed by Jose Mourinho 2-1 at Old Trafford and a 2-1 away victory over Pep Guardiola's premier league champions Manchester City along the way.
United would also advance from their Europa league group as group winners with 13 points, reaching the last 32 of the competition and reached the Semi-finals of the EFl Cup.
Overval, after more a year in the job,Ole Gunnar Solskjær has many ups and downs in the role with many fans now split between wanting him sacked and being giving more time in the role.
I,myself am in the first category and believe that Solskjær does not have what a takes to be a success at the club but also know that whoever would replace would also struggle.
In conclusion,it's certainly been interesting having Ole at the wheel and I like all Manchester United fans continue to wonder just what will happen next.
