Rick has no choice but to join the military.
At eighteen, Rick did not need to buy a lotto ticket;
The government did that, in a sense, for him.
Last year of the Draft; there was the Lottery;
numbers were drawn corresponding to
the individuals birthday—his number
was seventeen.  That meant he
would be drafted, and he was.

Yet he had thirty days to join
any service branch; so he joined
the Air Force
.  He figure if it was good
enough for his brother, it was good enough
for him.  The Army and the Marines were both
sending men to Vietnam; and if drafted, the
Army and Marines were the branches one
would end up in.

Turns out though, the Air Force did send
a few to Vietnam; Rick was selected.
Yet it wasn’t long before his base
was shelled by the Viet Cong.

Rick died, having “donated” blood for
his country, but also in a foreign land.
Lottery to death—it all happened
so fast.  He got a tattoo; the
ink was barely dry.
