Writing a poem every day requires some conscious discrimination
Not everything that pops
into my head is a poem,
but here I am in the attic
rummaging around,
kicking the timber.
I look for something second-hand
to repurpose, a knitted notion
comfortable and familiar
to soften sharp elbows to the ribs.
I want a piece that nestles
in my hand, glows a little
at the edges like eroded
Grecian marble, illuminated
and smooth as warm milk.
Not barbed brilliance—
glimmer and twinkle.
Something that pops.
I’ll know when I see it.
