A poem inspired by Demi Lovato's 'Skyscraper. WDC Community Challenge 2/20/2020
What We Were
(a poem inspired by 'Skyscraper' by Demi Lovato https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r_8ydghbGSg)

You wound your way into my heart,
becoming essential, an integral part,
until you've had enough, decide to leave,
knocking me off of my feet to grieve.
You smash my fragility, made of no more than glass
that shatters as angry, you push your way past;
you rip me roughly, then toss out the shreds
making clear what we were was just all in our heads.
I could lie here crumpled, glass slithers, bleeding
but I'm not giving in; instead I'm proceeding
to unwind the remnants of me from you,
and I'll get to my feet, get a much higher view.
I'll stand here, part broken, but remain stable,
I might be unsteady but without you I'm able
to gather some strength, stretch up to the clouds,
and like a skyscraper, I'll loosen the shrouds
and stand tall.
