STANDING OUT

By Kim Babcock

Prelude: Having a mental illness is commonplace and accepted in the community. What isn't accepted is not having one. DAVID tries to hide from his new friends CHUCK and FAYE that he doesn't have one...
Setting: A café DAVID CHUCK and FAYE are seated at a table enjoying coffee.
                                                 DAVID
Thanks for inviting me to sit with you.
                                                 FAYE
No problem. Always glad to help a newcomer to our town.
                                                 CHUCK
Yeah. Its fun to learn about newcomers.
                                                 FAYE
I know you want to be a peer support, Chuck, but you aren't there yet.
                                                 CHUCK
Okay, okay. But what are you studying at the college? What do you want to do?
                                                 DAVID
(gulps some coffee) I..uh...well, it's a psychology school so....
                                                 FAYE
But most of us are in search of ourselves or going for a job.
                                                 DAVID
I just want to learn more. Fit in.
                                                 CHUCK
Fit in? Whats not to fit in? Everyone is uniquely ill. That's the beauty of the world.
                                                 DAVID
I guess so.
                                                 FAYE
So what's your diagnosis?
                                                 DAVID
My uh, diagnosis? Well I don't really know.....
                                                 CHUCK
Everybody knows their diagnosis.... Who's your psychiatrist? Most of them specialize these days
                                                 FAYE
Better than that, what meds are you on? I'll bet I can tell your illness from that
                                                 DAVID
I just don't know my meds or anything

                                                 CHUCK
How can you not know? Everyone at least knows who their therapist is.
                                                 FAYE
Yeah, at least them
                                                 DAVID
Well, I uh, don't have one.
                                                 CHUCK
Wow, your meds work that good? That's awesome!
                                                 FAYE
I'll bet you been through DBT or something like that. That would make you at least bi-polar.
                                                 DAVID
(wipes away sweat) I really don't like all these questions.
                                                 CHUCK
We're just trying to get to know you....what's the big deal? It's not like you are normal or something.
                                                 DAVID
(falls out of chair)

                                                 FAYE
Oh my God, he is normal!!!
                                                 DAVID
(getting up) So what if I am? It's not that easy you know. All you think you're so much better than us. It can really bring a guy down to be normal.
                                                 FAYE
(excitedly) So you are depressed?
                                                 DAVID
(shakes head) I'm not depressed. I don't have a therapist or a psychiatrist. I don't take meds. Why does that make me so wrong?
                                                 FAYE
We'd never understand each other.
                                                 CHUCK
You should just quit school. You'll never get it.
                                                 FAYE
I'd leave town. Now that its out that you're normal you won't be able to go anywhere.
                                                 CHUCK
In fact, you'd better get out of here. (points to sign on wall)

                                                 SIGN
No normals allowed.
                                                 DAVID
(sighs, brushes himself off and exits)
                                                 CHUCK
I knew there was something about him that was straight.
                                                 FAYE
I didn't think he was that straight though. I mean he was actually.....
                                                 CHUCK and FAYE
SANE!!!
CHUCK and FAYE both start laughing and exit.

                                                 THE END

I think I could add more to it like CHUCK and FAYE talking about their own diagnoses. I just don't know what they would be. This is just a really rough draft.
