|Holding On To Freedom
As I lay gasping for air and take my last breath,
I want to grab freedom in the palms of my hands
And press it gently against my breast.
Come to me, freedom, before I enter death’s door
Or was I suppose to earn you as I journeyed down life’s roads?
I thought you were mine to have from the day I was born.
Pardon me, but did I hear someone say I was
Still a slave in my mother’s womb and
that I was born to live a life of doom and servitude!
But, didn't they hear that all slaves were decreed free
in our great land in the year eigthteen hundred and sixty-five
all slaves were granted their freedom and liberty.
Show me that liberation did set me free and
I shall never be bound again!
So, before I depart from this worldly place, please bid
my soul to cease from crying out in vain for the peace
freedom only you can bring. Then, I can walk peacefully
through the door of no return,
knowing that freedom is mine and yours forevermore.
